Edinburgh Amazon Defence (EAD)
www.facebook.com/edinburghamazondefence
.. is an organisation that was formed in response to the merciless attitude and treatment of the Amazon basin and the rainforests it supports. The result of this brutal disregard and exploitation by capitalist organisations upon this invaluable ecosystem will have a global impact of an immeasurable scale!
To many short- sighted opportunists, the forests represent a natural resource and an obvious opportunity for revenue. The best way we in the UK can respond to such issues is to empower the people directly affected by them, aid the local organisations challenging the politics behind them and act responsibly in our consumption of the products driving the industry behind them.
The increase in severe wildfires in Brazil throughout 2019 and the controversial handling of the matter by the government has urged us to raise this issue as far away as Scotland. We believe it is our duty to show solidarity and support for this precious region and its inhabitants. We feel these atrocious political actions should be responded to immediately. The EAD views this initial fundraising event as a ‘call to action’ by the environmentally conscious.
After researching and contacting several groups and charities protesting in Brazil (standing against the treatment of the Amazon's ecosystem and the indigenous people that live within it) we have selected two projects that we are initially fundraising for:
COIAB - Coordination of the Indigenous Organisations of the Brazilian Amazon https://coiab.org.br/conteudo/1550240778500x440908161301086200
This organisation represents around 160 different indigenous Brazilian tribes, inhabiting approximately 110 million hectares of Amazon territory. They campaign for native land ownership, healthcare, education and basic human and intercultural rights. In order to continue lobbying the government COIAB need financial aid.
The Indigenous People Project created by The Planetary Healing Centre
www.planetary-healing.org/project-indigenous.html The Planetary Healing Centre is an Edinburgh-based charity. Claudia Goncalves, charity organiser is working directly with groups in Brazil. Claudia set up The Indigenous People Project which has helped to establish educational resources, cultural adaptations and even revenue streams that allow displaced tribes to sustain themselves while retaining historical knowledge and a connection to their heritage. Some of the funds raised will benefit a community fund for the Kiriri (meaning 'silent') tribe, they are currently trying to gain the right to the land they inhabit in Minas, donated to them by the lease holder but contested by the government.
